Material Feminisms

Short Summary

In the introduction to their book on material feminisms Stacy Alaimo and Susan Hekman describe Material Feminisms. Comparing it to new materialism, Hekman and Alaimo describe how material feminisms emerged specifically from corporeal feminists, ecofeminists, and science studies. The authors are critical of dichotomies that are still used even after poststructuralist s critique of it (language/reality), focusing on the discursive (ideology, representations, etc.), cultural relativism, and social constuctionism.

Similarly to new materialism they call for what Bruno Latour calls a new settlement, that is a way to “understand the relationship between discourse and matter that does not privilege the former to the later” (6).
